F-Droid — download APK from f-droid.org (not in Play Store). Add IzzyOnDroid repo (apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/repo) for more apps. Verify SHA-256 hash of downloaded APK. For Play Store apps without a Google account: Aurora Store (anonymous Play Store client, F-Droid). For apps from GitHub releases: Obtainium (install directly from source, F-Droid).
iOS
No equivalent. App Store is the only option on iOS.
Research Findings
F-Droid is the FOSS app distribution ecosystem for Android. Apps are manually reviewed, tracker-free, built by F-Droid. ~3,800 apps in official repo. Google is making sideloading harder in some regions (Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand — September 2026 rollout). GrapheneOS allows sideloading by default.
